Your Voice in the Wilderness | |||||

The history of the United States of America is well-documented as one
of the great experiments of human social groupings of all times. A "Melting-Pot"
in which highly diverse characteristics and influences have largely melded, over time,
into a uniquely strong bonding. Drawing from the strengths of individual expression, and a committment to work together for the greatest common good, our Founders, their offspring and a continuing influx of immigrants from around the world over hundreds of years, have guided us through innumerable challenges with grace, wisdom, dignity and courage. We honor their contributions and sacrifices in providing us with a strong foundation and a heritage which is the envy of many around the world. We believe our strength derives both from a respect for these efforts, teachings and methods of the past, and a willingness to confront the future with vigor, optimism, faith and kindness. While there are many accomplishments of the past of which we can all be proud, there are also problems and failings which must be addressed with new visions. It is this ability to recognize and learn from these failings that has allowed humans throughout time to move forward -- to Progress. To go backwards is to retreat from the challenges that face us, out of fear of the unknown. We are not afraid. We will not be silenced. And we will not retreat passively or silently into our homes. Therefore, we hereby establish The Progressive Alliance. Let this go out as a notice to all who understand the challenges ahead, as we enter a new millennium: We will confront bigotry, ignorance, and the arrogant belief that any one group defines God better than the rest of us, with courage, faith, compassion, and humility. We will age in the political process, encouraging those who embrace the future. And we will seek to re-establish our communities as ones which will leave for our children the kind of world our forerunners left for us -- only better. Consequently, we believe:
 Robert Kennedy often quoted this
visionary passage:"Some see things as they are, and ask, 'Why?' I see things as they
could be and ask, 'Why not?'" |
